Drivers Training Resources

State of North Carolina Drivers Training Resources and Requirements for receiving your Learners Permit and Drivers License.

New Driver Information

You need to be at least 18 years old to apply for a North Carolina Driver License. You must complete required knowledge, roadside recognition, and vision and driving tests.

Teen Drivers

Teenagers between 15 and 17 years old must go through a process called graduated licensing before receiving full driving privileges in North Carolina.

Graduated Licensing

Teens at least 15 years old who have received a Driving Eligibility Certificate and a Driver’s Education Certificate from an approved driver education course can apply at an NCDMV driver license office for a North Carolina graduated license.

Driver Education Courses

Students who are at least 14½ years old and are pursuing a high school diploma or GED can enroll in an approved driver education course provided through North Carolina high schools. A birth certificate or passport is required to enroll.

​The North Carolina Driver’s Handbook provides information for obtaining a North Carolina driver license and learner permit. It also outlines the process for drivers to maintain their driving privileges and safely operate a motor vehicle.

Driver License Tests

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles administers several tests when an individual applies for a license or learner permit – and in some cases, when they renew their license.Applicants who do not pass the knowledge test or driving test for a regular Class C license may retake the test in seven calendar days.

How old do I have to be to get a learners permit?

To get a North Carolina learner permit, an individual must be at least 18 years old and apply in person at an N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles driver license office. (Individuals at least 18 years old may also apply for a driver license.)

I am over 18 and I am going to apply for a learners permit. What documents should I bring to DMV ?
  • One document verifying age and identity.
  • A Social Security card or one document proving they have a Social Security number
  • For U.S. citizens, one document proving residency
  • For non-U.S. citizens, one document issued by the U.S. government indicating legal presence
  • One document proving liability insurance coverage from a provider licensed to do business in North Carolina (not required for a learner’s permit)
What must I do to successfully complete to obtain a learners permit?

Qualified applicants must successfully complete the required knowledge, road sign recognition, vision, and driving test and take the required documents to an NCDMV driver’s license office. (see above question for required document list)

Can I drive alone once I have my learners permit?

While operating a motor vehicle, a permit holder must be accompanied in the front passenger seat by a licensed adult.
